Book Review: Dexter in the Dark

Maybe it was too many Stephen King novels or horror movies when I was younger, but I just love the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay.  And I just read Dexter in the Dark, and it, like it’s predecessors, was not a disappointment.

Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter expert for the Miami-Dade police by day, and serial killer by night.  But Dexter only hunts bad people.  I know, it’s crazy, but it truly is one of the most unique concepts in modern fiction.

If you have read either of the previous two Dexter books, you will be familiar with the cast of characters.  Or you may watch the television show Dexter on the Showtime network, or on CBS.  It truly is one of the best show on TV…a little demented, but well written, acted, and filmed.  But back to the book.

We meet back up with Dexter right before he marries his girlfriend, Rita, and becomes Daddy Dexter to her two children, Astor and Cody, two precocious youths who have been showing signs of sharing their soon-to-be step dad’s proclivities.  There is a new killer in Miami and the entire police force is on the hunt for someone who keeps killing people and replacing their heads with ceramic bull heads.

Dexter unwittingly stumbles upon a killer whose “dark passenger” is much more powerful and dangerous than his own.  And Dexter soon finds himself struggling with being human.  And since he does not possess the capability of being human, this is quite a conundrum.

The was a great story and a very entertaining read.  We get into the mind and thoughts of a deranged lunatic, who masquerades as one of us, and does it all too well.  It’s thought provoking, chilling, and exciting, all wrapped up in one a killer of a story.

The television show doesn’t really follow along in the same continuum of the novels, so this is an exciting adventure while we wait for season 4 this fall.  I loved Dexter in the Dark and look forward to reading the next installment and visit the world of Dexter!
