Sunday Night Decompress

It’s been a LONG time since I did a Sunday Night Decompress…and it’s been a while since I darkened the door of a church.  And since I went to church this morning, I thought I might as well drop a little decompress on you!  Sometimes you don’t have ANYTHING to say, and sometimes you have STUFF to say…today is that day…

So without any further adieu, here goes!

  • Have I mentioned lately that it’s FOOTBALL SEASON!!!???  Thank you Lord, and Hockey season is coming!
  • I went to New Walk Church today – one of my favorites and several friends have been attending lately.  As always, great music, great speaking, and great to see so many old friends!
  • After church Sid and I spent some time at Smokey Bones for lunch.  We had received some gift cards way back when, and finally got around to using them!  I *heart* good BBQ!
  • We spent a few hours running SUPER SECRET errands…more on that MUCH later.
  • It’s Sunday in Fall, so that means football and ANOTHER day of the Bucs sucking their way through a game…BUT my Dirty Birds (Falcons) pulled an upset in New Orleans! WOW!
  • It’s Sunday and that ALSO means taping a nap with my lovely bride in the afternoon…  Ahhhhh life :)
  • After we woke up it was time for our late night run: 3.1 miles at an 18 minute pace – not great, but better than a year ago.  (A year ago, I was a couch potato…so ANYTHING is better than last year, and NEXT year will be better than THIS year!)
  • Got home and had a little dinner and Undercover Boss – INSPIRATIONAL!
  • Heading to a really much needed sleep!

LOOKING AHEAD

  • On Friday Mom and Jim come in for a few weeks in FLA (we’re spending 3 nights at Disney, which is AWESOME!)
  • Saturday AM Mom, Sid, and myself will be running/walking in Mickey’s Halloween 5K and then in the late PM, Sid and I will be running in the Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon Relay!  Prayers are VERY welcome.
  • Sunday night the whole family is attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in Magic Kingdom – very excited!!
  • Sid starts working in Orlando on Wednesday – which will be great and nerve wracking all at once.  She’s commuting and starting a job custom made for her.  It’s truly a blessing.
  • I hope to be blogging more…I have some topics to unpack, but it may be uncomfortable for me to write and for you to read.  We shall see…

Crazy Sunday

I’ve been struggling with a weird cold that Sid and I have been swapping back and forth for the last few weeks. THIS week, it’s my turn to have no voice, fever, sore throat… It basically sucks. But illness not withstanding, I have not experienced a 24 hour period like I did last Sunday, it was amazing!

Two old friends of mine, Pam and Jim Fenoff came over from Orlando to spend the night and Sunday with us, but I’m getting ahead of myself..

6:00 am – The alarm went off and I got up and took a shower.  The I hit ‘The Book’, for some quiet time with God and hear something from my Savior.

7:30 am – Breakfast, yep a FULL breakfast of pancakes, eggs, fruit, and Bacon Explosion!  It was marvelous!  After we ate, I hit the road to be at church early, and I got out of doing dishes!!

9:00 am – Downbeat for band rehearsal.  everything went well, I felt pretty good playing and all the elements seemed to be coming together.

10:30 am – Service Begins.  Today Common Ground started a new series, God Love Sex, based on the Song of Songs.  Hot stuff for a church to talk about, but we need to hear about sex, just like money, sin, Hell, and Heaven.

12:00 -Service ends, and it was awesome!  We had cool videos, some extra surprises and an amazing stage set.  I really felt like I was back in my niche.  Well, church was over, and only 1/3 of my Sunday was over…what next???

1:00 pm - The Florida State Fair!!  Sid, the Fenoff’s, and myself drove over the fairgrounds and enjoyed the entertainment, the attractions, the fair exhibits…but mainly, it was all about the FAIR FOOD!!  I cannot even begin to list the different items we tried, but they were all good, but only once a year….

6:00 pm – Sid and I had enough of the fair and we STILL had Super Bowl plans…so we drove over to our annual football ritual at the lovely home of Doug and V, friends from back in the day….  Shrimp, beer, brats, and baked beans were the menu items, and Saints v. Colts the entertainment.

9:45 pm – Saints win!  Saints win! Saints win! I cannot believe it!  Everyone told me I was pulling for a loser, but justice prevailed!!

10:30 pm – Sid and I got home, took some cold medicine, and crawled into bed for a good nights rest.  It was truly an amazingly crazy Sunday!

Book Review: Teacher Man

Frank McCourt, author of  Teacher Man, has led one of the most amazing lives in history.  I am happy that I chose to listen to this book on audio, because it was read by the author himself.

McCourt skillfully waves an enthralling tale of his 30+ years as a school teacher in the New York City School System.  He laughs and cries, condemns and scolds, and always with his unique insight to life, literature, and the human psyche that challenges the listener [reader] and endures Frank McCourt as a truly American author.

“As he did so adroitly in his previous memoirs, McCourt manages to uncover humor in nearly everything. He writes about hilarious misfires, as when he suggested (during his teacher’s exam) that the students write a suicide note, as well as unorthodox assignments that turned into epiphanies for both teacher and students. A dazzling writer with a unique and compelling voice, McCourt describes the dignity and difficulties of a largely thankless profession with incisive, self-deprecating wit and uncommon perception. It may have taken him three decades to figure out how to be an effective teacher, but he ultimately saved his most valuable lesson for himself: how to be his own man.” –Shawn Carkonen

It’s not pretty or proper, but then again, neither is Frank McCourt.  But life is often messy and happiness or depression is where you find it.  One thing is for certain, once you meet Frank McCourt, and you allow him to permeate your soul, you will forever be changed.

QUOTABLES

  • “I didn’t call myself anything. I was more than a teacher. And less.”
  • “In the high school classroom you are a drill sergeant, a rabbi, a shoulder to cry on, a disciplinarian, a singer, a low level scholar, a clerk, a referee, a clown, a counselor, a dress-code enforcer, a conductor, an apologist, a philosopher, a collaborator, a tap dancer, a traffic cop, a priest, a mother-father-brother-sister-uncle-aunt, a bookkeeper, a critic, a psychologist, the last straw.”
  • “I was already dreaming of a school where teachers were guides and mentors, not taskmasters.”
  • “I’m teaching. Storytelling is teaching. Storytelling is a waste of time. I can’t help it. I’m not good at lecturing.”
  • “F. Scott Fitzgerald said ‘there are no second acts in American lives.’ I think I’ve proven him wrong. And all because I refused to settle for a one-act existence, the 30 years I taught English in various New York City high schools.”
