In an alternate 2009, the dark, violent, graphic Watchmen are transformed into a “kid friendly” Saturday morning cartoon series. (Don’t worry, there are NO full-frontal scenes with Dr. Manhattan) Funny (or sad) thing is, I’d watch this….

Movie Review: Watchmen

I got a phone call from Sid, and on the other line, my lovely wife asked, “So, I have 2 passes to go see Watchmen tonight, do you want to go?” I didn’t even let her finish, “YES!!” And it began…the REAL anticipation of the realization of a 3 year dream: to see Watchmen, the movie. I have read , by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, at least 3 times in the past 2 years alone…it is far and away one of the greatest graphic novels/comic books of all time!
I cannot even begin to give you a complete synopsis of the plot, it is way too grand to even attempt to. That’s one reason why, for many years, Watchmen was considered too grand a scale to put on to film. It was even deemed, “un-filmable” by many. I believe that Zack Snyder has truly pulled it off.
In a SMALL nutshell, we are immersed in to an alternate 1985, the world is mere seconds from nuclear war. A band of everyday people-turned masked crime fighters, the Watchmen, are being incapacitated. And when the mystery is completely unfolded, an enigma arises that compels one to ask, who watches the watchmen?
DVD Review: Wall-E
I spent last night with my lovely wife, and we watched WALL-E on DVD. I had seen WALL-E before, but watching it on my computer screen, was a whole new, wonderful experience. The DVD has some cool extras, but I did not have the 3 disc set to watch (we had borrowed a friend’s regular version). The regular DVD features BURN-E, an additional short featuring some back story about the AXIOM, the feature, “Presto” that was played in the theatrical release, and a feature on the sound creation for the movie. This feature was great for me (I’m a geek) because WALL-E utilized the talents of Sound Design Legend, Ben Burtt. Burtt worked on a little movie called Star Wars.
If you haven’t watched WALL-E, shame on you! But seriously, it’s a brilliant amalgam of Disney and Pixar. They brought in the best and the brightest on board to tell the story of WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earth Class) as he finds love and travels the galaxy. Along the way we meet EVE (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) and whole crew of other robots and humans.
The fascinating this about WALL-E, is that a majority of the story is told with minimal naration or dialog. It’s a love story and adventure, it’s science fiction on a Disney scale. I cannot recommend it enough. If you have some extra time, and want to explore the world of WALL-E, visit his home page HERE.
