First Week of Work

It’s now Friday, and I am home after my first week at my new job.  I cannot tell you how excited I am to be a part of Church of the Suncoast.  It’s going to be amazing to see what God does!

I wanted to give you my impressions of my first week of work.

They built a new office for the lead pastor, and it wasn’t finished on Monday AM.  The problem was, I could not move in to my office, until the new office was done and the lead pastor moved into his new digs.

So we put in some carpet, laid some base boards, made a run to IKEA for some furniture, and then painted the office.  I went home and Brian and Cheryl finished moving him in.

The whole day, Brian was worried that my first day wasn’t turning out the way he or I expected.  The reality of the situation is that it was probably the best first day of work ever…

I spent the whole day hanging out with Brian and his wife and got to know them.  It was probably one of the best team building days I have had for a while.  What could have been boring and slow…turned out to be a GREAT team building and relationship building experience.

The rest of the week was spent settling in, running a few errands and reading through the past year (or two) of Staff Meeting notes, leadership packets, and small group guides.  I spent a majority of my time getting to know where and with whom I was serving.

Here’s my take-away for my first week of work:

Perhaps you need to NOT work and just spend time with your team.

Adjusting to a new job is tough, and by spending time with my new team, I felt more at ease, and we started building the relationships we need to do ministry together.  Maybe it wasn’t as productive as it could have been, but it many ways, those hours spent together in unstructured time, will pay off id HUGE dividends.
