Many of the teaching of Jesus Christ deal with either being a giver or a taker. Christ talks about giving of your time, your talents, and your money. And the Bible is pretty clear that you should GIVE more than you TAKE. But in our “It’s all about ME” culture, how do guard our hearts to make sure that we give much more than we take.
I’ve been in ministry long enough to know that people, in general, take much more than they give. You can see it all around “the church”. People “Church Shop” and look for ways that the Bride of Christ can “meet MY needs.” Some people also abuse the good graces of the Church by abusing many benevolence and food pantry ministries. It’s sad, but many people EXPECT the church to take care of them, in spite of all the horrible decisions that they make every day.
We, as Christ-followers, are designed to be givers. Jesus was the ultimate giver – He gave His life for us. God gave His one and only Son. Jesus tells us that the greatest gift we could give is to lay our lives down for someone.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
So are you a giver or a taker?
Be honest, God sees everything and it’s a waste of time to lie to yourself.
