Living and growing up in the South, you learn a healthy respect for all things Southern: friend chicken, catfish, sweet tea, Nascar, SEC football, and of course, pro wrestling. I have watch wrestling on and off for about 30+ years. From TBS World Championship Wrestling with Gordon Solie announcing to WCW, and WWF and then the WWE. I even enjoy the newer TNA and Ring of Honor promotions. I know that it’s a little redneck, but I love it. I get caught up in the drama. It truly is “soap opera for men.” And I really do enjoy it.
SO I get a call from my friend, Tony Moran, and he offers me tickets to Wrestlemania 24 in Orlando. So of course I said “Yes!!!” So I am about to embark to Orlando in a few minutes. Why did I say ‘yes’? The spectacle, the production value, the loud explosions, the music, the fans, the craziness that IS the WWE Experience. I really enjoy it. And it reminds me that this culture, this society REALLY is looking for heroes, people that they can root for and believe in. And that is why I LOVE the modern day church plants.
Church planting is a lot like the WWE, you can’t describe it, you just have to experience it! When you are a church planter, you really are tapped in to the cry of this generation: looking for someone, anyone to believe in and put their faith, and their energy behind. And just like tonight at Wrestlmania, people will spend ENORMOUS amounts of time and energy to cheer for their favorites. Wresltemania reminds me that this generation WANTS to cheer for someone, NEEDS to cheer for someone. The MUST HAVE something to believe in that is greater than themselves.
I know what you’re saying…”It’s all FAKE!!” And to that I say this, yes, the matches may be scripted, but if you have a 300 lb. man, doing a moonsault off the top rope, and YOU’RE the guy lying on the mat getting ready to get landed on, would YOU think that it’s all fake? I hear that a lot of churches who meet in movie theaters and schools are fake. Bacause they don’t have building, they are not “real churches”. And to that I say this, if you have someone who’s life is MIRACULOUSLY changed because of meeting Jesus Christ in a movie theater and you see the fruit in their lives, who are YOU to judge what real church is and isn’t.
I really hope I enjoy tonight. I hope Sarah enjoys it more….oh yeah, didn’t I mention that my WIFE is going along with me to Wrestlmania? I’ll post pictures tomorrow. Make sure that you check her out in HER World Championship Wrestling CREW T-shirt. I married on hot redneck southern woman!!
