1 Big Question
The other day, I spent the afternoon watching Oprah Winfrey interview Rainn Wilson. Wilson, best known as Dwight Shrute from the Office, is a member of the Baha’i faith and he shares his faith and beliefs with Oprah during her satellite radio program. Rainn is also the co-creator of SoulPancake.com. The website’s goal is to inspire people to talk about life’s big questions and explore their own spirituality and creativity through art, music, photography, social networking, thoughtful discussion and more.
During the interview, Rainn asked one of these questions to Oprah, and it has stuck with me. It has been rattling around in my mind all day and night.
What do you know?
It’s a truly amazing question. For many of us, we go through our lives never really KNOWING what we know. We assume that we have standards and core beliefs, but how many times do we truly stop and think this through? What do you know, and why do you know it? Is it true? Or is it true to you?
As a follower of Christ, I have certain beliefs that I hold true and very close to my core, but do I KNOW them? Why do I know them? Am I just regurgitating facts that I have been taught, or have I truly processed them through logic and discerned the truth. Do I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, or am I just saying it, because it’s what I have heard over and over again at numerous church services I have attended? Is my whole life structured around what I BELIEVE of what I THINK I believe?
But the 1 Big Question transcends God and religion, it also exists in our every day lives. What do I KNOW about Politics, Love, the Environment, Relationships, my Family, the Economy…? It goes on and on. I think that periodically asking ourselves the 1 Big Question about various areas of our life will be like Morpheus asking Neo to swallow the Red of Blue pill, because once we wake up from our daily drudgery and have to KNOW something, we can no longer live in the Matrix of our mundane existences. We have to start KNOWING as opposed to just FEELING.
I would highly encourage to take the 60 minutes and watch the interviews, and then take the time to ask yourself the 1 Big Question about all the areas of your life.
