7 Ways to Survive a Bad Boss
We’ve all had a bad boss experience (or 2) in our professional lifetimes. What do you do when you love your job, but struggle with your boss? How do you survive in a toxic environment?
Here’s 7 ideas that will help you survive a bad boss…
1) Realize that there is a reason they’re your boss.
The person who is in charge of you (your boss) is there because God has allowed them to be in that position (Heb. 13:7). This may be a great opportunity for you to learn from them, but remember that this may also be a way that God is shaping you into the person He wants YOU to be.
2) Realize that you can’t ‘fix’ them.
The only person you control is you; therefore, the only person you can change, is you. Work on your issues that you bring in to the relationship and help your boss by leading up. Focusing on you will make your boss’ issues seem a little smaller.
3) Own up to what you do.
You are responsible for your own actions. Even if you have the worst boss ever, you don’t have the right to blame everything on them. Don’t allow a poor leader be your excuse to be a poor leader.
4) Raise up good leaders around you.
Pull your focus off of your boss’ shortcomings and spend more time investing in the people around you. Build up the team, it will be the most productive use of your time.
5) Keep your mouth shut.
Do not speak publicly about your situation. Period. Not to friends, family, co-workers, or your spouse. Also refrain from posting on Social Media sites, many companies monitor employee’s social media accounts. Remember, speaking poorly of a co-worker shows a lack of character on your part.
6) Don’t take it home.
Your spouse is not your counselor or mentor. There is no need to bring the frustration and anger home to your family. It’s unhealthy for you and your family.
7) Find safe places and people.
If you continue to struggle with a bad boss, or work situation, find a counselor or mentor to talk to. Find safe people to be around. Find safe places, areas you can go and relax and forget about the stress.
