John Maxwell Arrested

Bestselling Christian leadership author John Maxwell was arrested after an airport security agent found a gun in his luggage at Palm Beach International Airport in South Florida.  For the full story, click here.

In a nutshell, John was speaking at church in Alabama, and after his speaking engagement, someone gave him a gift, a handgun meant for his wife, for protection while John was away on business.  After forgetting the gun was in his carry-on, when he went through airport security, they found the gun, and promptly arrested John.

I have to applaud John Maxwell for IMMEDIATELY owning up to his mistake and trying to cover it over.  He put in on his blog and did not try to hide it.

I owe most of my leadership ability to Maxwell’s influence and direction.  And with this incident, he AGAIN uses it in a teaching capacity, from his blog, John writes about 2 lessons he has learned,

First, take responsibility for your own actions. What I did was wrong, and it was my fault. I certainly didn’t intend to break the law, but I will face up to the consequences.

The second lesson, to use the words of my friend Kevin Myers, is this: “Stupid hurts.” If you’re not paying attention and you do something stupid, it’s going to hurt you.

I thank God for guys like John Maxwell, and I pray that this situation works itself out quickly, and with as little fall-out as possible.  But it again shows that everything rises and falls on leadership, and one small mistake can cause an avalanche, very quickly.  So pay attention and when you do mess up, own up to it.
