As I sit in my lovely home, with my wife, I am thinking about what will transpire tomorrow. Tomorrow, starting at 11:30, the swearing in ceremony will begin for Barack Obama. I remember watching the 2004 Democratic Convention, and listened to this young, extraordinarily handsome senator from Illinois give a rousing keynote address to his constituents, I knew that he would, one day, be President.
Throughout the history of the United States, we have had good and bad men lead the highest office in the land. We have had large men, skinny men, older and younger. We have had Republican and Democrats, we have even had rednecks! But we have never had an African American. Never. Until tomorrow. Tomorrow, Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States. I believe that our Union, for it to be truly great, must get past the outer exterior of a person, and look to his character and beliefs. Men (and women) should be judged on their ideas, and their ideals. What are you most passionate about, instead of the color of your skin.
I am proud for my country, I wish that it had happened before now, but it has finally arrived. January 20, 2009 will be a day that will forever be remembered as a turning point in the history of our nation. I did not vote for Obama, and watching the news on some of his choices in Cabinet members, and the rumor mill that is Chicago politics, I am not a “fan”. But he is going to be my President. He is going to be a great President, even if he is not yet ready for greatness, the office will demand him to be as such. I will support and pray for him and for his family, as I have all my Presidents. I pray that God grants him wisdom and vision, grace, and peace, not only for Obama, but the entire nation.
“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
- William Shakespeare
