Book Review: Watchmen

As many of my friends know, I am a FAN of comic books. I love reading them and reading about them. This is the 2nd time that I have read Watchmen, a graphic novel, which is a complete series of comic books written together in one edition.

Written by legendary comic author, Alan Moore, and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 where superheroes exist, but they are flawed and real. Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all time high. The world is on the brink of World War III. The vigilante Rorschach is investigating the murder of the Comedian, and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes [Adventurers]. Rorschach discovers a far wider ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues’ past which could completely change the course of history.

Moore and Gibbons provide an amazing story woven around the social commentary of the 80′s that transcends the date of its writing. It hold a mirror up to all of our faces and makes us ask the question, “Who Watches the Watchmen?”

Zack Snyder, of 300 fame, is helming the much awaited feature film version of the book. It is set to premier in March of 2009.
